The Private Eye studio activity will focus on close scientific observation, descriptive language, drawing and poetic writing using The Private Eye materials. Students will use the jeweler’s loupe to look at their fingerprint and to look at natural materials. They will draw what they see and begin a sandwich poem using their observations. This activity connects primarily to the Visual Arts, Language Arts and Science curricula.

Students will experience Asian ink painting by using authentic ink stones, ink sticks, brushes and paper while learning the basic strokes for the creation of bamboo images. They will use the elements of line, value, balance, and composition to fill their paper. As a follow-up activity in the classroom, the students can write a poem to accompany their work. This activity connects primarily to the Visual Arts, Social Studies and Language Arts curricula.

Students will detect lines of symmetry in art, nature, architecture and symbols and produce a three-dimensional cube from a square using several types of lines. The students will also use that square as the foundation for the creation of a landscape painting. This activity connects primarily to the Visual Arts and Math curricula.

Artist Paul Klee once remarked that “A line is a dot that went for a walk.” Students will talk about different types of lines and create a work of art by taking a dot for a stroll. This activity is suitable for younger and older students and connects primarily to the Visual Arts, Language Arts and Math curricula.
